Winnipeg, MB — Christopher C. Clacio will formally file his nomination papers as a candidate for Mayor of Winnipeg at City Hall on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., marking the opening day of the 2026 civic nomination period.
At the filing, Clacio will also announce his formal endorsement of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives–Manitoba (CCPA-MB) 2026 Alternative Municipal Budget, released on Thursday, September 10, 2026, with one specified caveat: he will not support an increase to Winnipeg’s standalone business tax.
The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, in its 2026 Civic Election Platform: The City We Build, recommends phasing out Winnipeg’s standalone business tax and blending it with commercial property taxes over several years (Recommendation 5.5). Clacio’s approach balances support for the Chamber’s business‐tax framework with endorsement of the Alternative Budget’s broader priorities for housing, safety, transit, and climate action.
“Today I’m filing my nomination for Mayor and endorsing the CCPA-MB Alternative Budget’s priorities for housing, safety, transit, and climate action. I support its community-driven approach, but I will not raise the business tax. We can fund these priorities through other revenue tools and efficiencies that protect local employers and jobs, ” said Clacio.
“While much of the early attention in this race has focused on a few well-known names, my campaign is about how we do politics differently in Winnipeg. This election should be less about personalities and more about practical solutions, respectful dialogue, and giving residents a real say in the decisions that affect their daily lives.”
The 2026 Alternative Municipal Budget, titled Weaving a Better Winnipeg, was co-written by 24 local experts from 17 community organizations and outlines a fully costed plan to prioritize housing, safety, transit, and climate action while placing greater revenue responsibility on those with the greatest ability to contribute.
Clacio’s nomination filing will take place in person at Winnipeg City Hall, as required, with the nomination period running from September 16 to 4:30 p.m. on September 22, 2026. Election day is Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
Media are invited to attend the 8:30 a.m. nomination filing at City Hall. A brief statement and photo opportunity will follow.
